SKITTLE-GROUP
HISTORY OF THE SKITTLE GROUP "ALLE NEUNE"

The present Skittle Group "Alle Neune" was established in 1992 by Annamaria Kortz and other interested members of the Brisbane German Club. The previous Skittle Group "Gut Holz" was founded in 1927 and disbanded in 1987 due to lack of interested players. On the average there are about 10-14 players each year battling it out to win the prized trophies as well as the "Wanderpokal" (Club trophy) which was donated by the brothers Keith and Louis Childs in 1992 in honour of their mother who was a player in the Skittle Group in 1927.

It is the aim of the Skittle Group to attract enough members so that one day they can hold tournaments between the Sydney and Melbourne Skittle Groups. At the beginning of the year, the players meet the second Wednesday of January and thereafter every second Wednesday night at 6pm sharp. The game goes for approximately three hours, depending on how many players have joined for that year. The Skittle lane is one of the oldest (since 1933 when the present club house was built) still operating manually. Some clubs have automated skittle lanes, but Brisbane still needs their skittle boy or girl to put up the skittles after each throw.

The skittles and balls were originally imported from America and are showing battle scars after being in service since 1927. A new set of skittles and balls were also purchased from Germany in 1998 to add variety to the game as the newer set is lighter and easier to handle than the old wooden set. Each game consists of ten frames with different pictures such as the "27" shot or otherwise known as "Orange", there is also "Stina" which consists of just three pins placed running down the middle. With each frame the pins have different value.

The highest being a 96 which means only the first pin left standing with one shot. It's great entertainment and fun for every age, with our youngest player being 14 and the oldest being 82.
